Advancing Diversity in Academic Nursing

Recent data indicate that newly insured under the Affordable Care Act are more likely to be younger, socioeconomically disadvantaged, and either Hispanic, non-Hispanic Black, or non-Hispanic Asian.

Current estimates report that more than half of the U.S. population will belong to a group other than non-Hispanic White by 2044.

Academic nursing must accelerate efforts to ensure that the future nursing workforce represents the diversity of the U.S. population and is able to organize, plan, deliver, and evaluate care that is culturally relevant, sensitive, and congruent.

Nursing accreditation, innovative pipeline programs, and academic–practice partnerships arrangements can foster diversity in academic nursing.
