Variability in organic compounds was studied in radiation- and thermal-altered coal. Uranium minerals caused only a local radiation-induced alteration in the coal matter. The methylnaphthalene ratios (MNR) correlated with uranium concentrations in coal. In the burning zone, coal was altered to a mixture of char and solid bitumen. In the burnt-out zone, formed by clinker, only small coke particles were preserved.
