A modified LC–MS/MS procedure allows quantification of all major retinyl ester species. Quiescent hepatic stellate cells synthesize predominantly retinyl palmitate using LRAT. In the absence of LRAT, quiescent hepatic stellate cells synthesize retinyl esters using DGAT1. Quiescent hepatic stellate cells retain the capacity to store retinyl esters in lipid droplets.
