This article summarizes the principal invited lectures at the 29th International Conference on Antiviral Research. Douglas (Doug) Richman, Elion Award recipient, described drug resistance in patients with HIV infections. Robert (Bob) Vince, Holý Award recipient, described research leading to the discovery of abacavir. Jerome Deval (Prusoff Award) reported on the first nucleoside analog, ALS-8176, tested in a human RSV-challenge study. Keynote talks focused on genomic studies (influenza, enterovirus D68, Zika virus) and Ebola virus (past, present, future).
