Formally extraneous features influence order of evaluation in arithmetic.

Closely-spaced and easy-to-evaluate sub-expressions are prioritized for evaluation.

These tendencies reliably increase with age over Dutch grades 4–8 (USA grades 2–6).

Shifts towards abstract or formal thinking cannot account for these developmental trends.
