The context-contingent nature of cross-modal activations of the visual cortex

Crossmodal facilitation of information processing is well documented.

Lateralised sounds activate visual cortices even when task-irrelevant.

We show that spatial (un)predictability of sounds is critical for crossmodal activations.

Thus, the crossmodal activations of visual cortices are context-contingent in nature.

Attention renders regularities in distracter stimulation a ‘double-edged sword’.
