The oxidation behaviors of titanium matrix composites fabricated by reactive sintering of Ti + Mo2C and Ti + VC compacts were studied. From the mass gain after the oxidation, Mo2C additive was beneficial and the oxidation resistance did not increase with the addition; while VC additive was detrimental. Microstructural analyses show that a protective oxide layer forms on the surface of Ti + x%Mo2C composites after high temperature exposure. In contrast, the oxide layer formed on the Ti + x%VC composites is not protective. The effects of Mo, V, TiC on the oxidation mechanism of TMCs were also discussed.
