Acute encephalopathy is frequently observed in Japanese children. Underlying pathomechanism remain unknown in more than 40% of the patients. Brain metabolism in unclassified encephalopathy was evaluated by MR spectroscopy. MR spectroscopy showed transient increase of glutamine, suggesting excitotoxicity. Prompt astrocytic neuroprotection may prevent progression.
