We investigate the structure of peri-urban forests in 283 European regions. Forest cover is larger in western Europe. Forest cover decreases in compact cities and increases with urban sprawl. Forests with regular shapes and small patch size are associated with urban sprawl. Results identify a ‘sprawl’ model determining fragmented natural landscapes.
