N-myc is expressed primarily during embryogenesis, in particular in the neural crest and its derivatives. Neural crest cells initially express N-myc uniformly, but later only the populations undergoing differentiation into neurons or adrenomedulla exhibit a significant level of N-myc expression. Forced expression of N-myc above endogenous level in migrating neural crest resulted in premature differentiation of neurons, indicating that high N-myc expression drives the neural crest cells to the neuronal pathway of differentiation.
