The oxidation resistance of Mg–2.5Y, Mg–2.5Y–2.5Al and Mg–2.5Y–4.2Al was compared.

Solid-solute Y element can benefit to improve the oxidation resistance of Mg.

Stable existing Al2Y compound will deteriorate the oxidation resistance of magnesium alloys.

Oxide films were characterized by SEM, XRD and XPS techniques.

Y2O3 and Al2O3 are formed prior than MgO during oxidation process.
