Not only stiffness, but also yield strength of the trabecular structure determined by non-linear µFE is best predicted by bone volume fraction and fabric tensor

The morphology of 126 trabecular samples is evaluated on µCT scans via 25 indices. Their elastic and yield properties are computed for 9 load cases by nonlinear µFEA. 98% of the variance of the elastic and yield properties is explained by BV/TV and fabric tensor. Accounting for other morphological indices does not improve this predictive value. The fabric tensor explains more the variance of the yield strength (23%) than the variance of the stiffness (9%).
