Using chemical techniques, we have examined the effect of mercaptoacetic acid (MCA), on the corrosion behaviour of aluminium alloy (3SR) in hydrochloric acid solutions. Mercaptoacetic acid acts as an accelerator of corrosion of aluminium in HCl solutions, and with mercaptoacetic acid additions, a pronounced effect was observed on the corrosion rate of aluminium and the results gave first order kinetics. The accelerating action of mercaptoacetic acid on aluminium corrosion is ascribed to a catalytic effect on the hydrogen evolution reaction.
