Steam reforming of toluene, as a model compound of biomass tar is investigated. Various experiments and characterization including XAFS reveale the role of Ba. Ba addition to Ni-supported catalysts shows high activity and low coke formation. Electron donation from Ba to Ni enables high catalytic performance of Ba/Ni/LaAlO3.
