Research showed an increased risk of cardiovascular disease in adulthood in preeclampsia offspring. Umbilical cord vessels are proposed to reflect newborn vascular health. Preeclampsia is associated with a smaller umbilical cord vein area and wall thickness. These may be a proxy for early features of disturbed cardiovascular development in the newborn.
