We studied Staphylococcus aureus prevalence in dogs, cats and veterinary personnel (VP).
S. aureus prevalence among pets and VP was 36.3% and 38.9%, respectively.
Among 60 S. aureus strains, 12 were mecA and four mecC −positive.
Higher prevalence of S. aureus isolation was observed among young, ownerless animals in rural areas with underline diseases and CNS co-carriage.
Identical or very similar PVL-positive S. aureus strains, of human origin, are spread.
