AFM PF-QNM can highlight mechanical gradients at the submicrometre scale. Elastic skin/core effect in aramid fibre is shown. Two distinct indentation moduli in the S2 wall of developing flax fibres is shown. No evidence for any stiffness gradients within the S2 layer of technical flax fibre.
