We consider how partial migration has evolved. Two approaches are used: adaptive dynamics and evolutionary game theory. We show that negative density dependence alone can explain this phenomenon. An exact formula is presented for the optimal allocation strategy towards migrants. This strategy is an evolutionary stable strategy and a convergence stable strategy.
