Lower fractions of raw (NOS)/calcined (COS) oyster shells removed P from saltwater.

Oyster-shell calcination boosted P removal (95%) from saltwater after 15 min.

Adsorption (for NOS) and a co-mechanism of precipitation (for COS) was suggested.

NOS and COS removed P up to the permitted levels for effluent discharge.
