Multiplicity dependence of charged pion, kaon, and (anti)proton production at large transverse momentum in p-Pb collisions at

The production of charged pions, kaons and (anti)protons has been measured at mid-rapidity (w the MathML source">−0.5<y<0) in p–Pb collisions at w the MathML source" class="mathImg" data-mathURL="/science?_ob=MathURL&_method=retrieve&_eid=1-s2.0-S0370269316303914&_mathId=si1.gif&_user=111111111&_pii=S0370269316303914&_rdoc=1&_issn=03702693&md5=1c2ae747013ad8d2a2bc1ccb56bc8b85">width="105" alt="View the MathML source" style="margin-top: -5px; vertical-align: middle" title="View the MathML source" src="/sd/grey_pxl.gif" data-inlimgeid="1-s2.0-S0370269316303914-si1.gif"> using the ALICE detector at the LHC. Exploiting particle identification capabilities at high transverse momentum (w the MathML source">pT), the previously published w the MathML source">pT spectra have been extended to include measurements up to 20 GeV/c   for seven event multiplicity classes. The w the MathML source">pT spectra for pp collisions at w the MathML source" class="mathImg" data-mathURL="/science?_ob=MathURL&_method=retrieve&_eid=1-s2.0-S0370269316303914&_mathId=si11.gif&_user=111111111&_pii=S0370269316303914&_rdoc=1&_issn=03702693&md5=0e57ad0bb248f456bc87959bd0554927">width="71" alt="View the MathML source" style="margin-top: -5px; vertical-align: middle" title="View the MathML source" src="/sd/grey_pxl.gif" data-inlimgeid="1-s2.0-S0370269316303914-si11.gif">, needed to interpolate a pp reference spectrum, have also been extended up to 20 GeV/c   to measure the nuclear modification factor (w the MathML source">RpPb) in non-single diffractive p–Pb collisions.

At intermediate transverse momentum (w the MathML source">2<pT<10 GeV/c) the proton-to-pion ratio increases with multiplicity in p–Pb collisions, a similar effect is not present in the kaon-to-pion ratio. The w the MathML source">pT dependent structure of such increase is qualitatively similar to those observed in pp and heavy-ion collisions. At high w the MathML source">pT (w the MathML source">>10 GeV/c), the particle ratios are consistent with those reported for pp and Pb–Pb collisions at the LHC energies.

At intermediate w the MathML source">pT the (anti)proton w the MathML source">RpPb shows a Cronin-like enhancement, while pions and kaons show little or no nuclear modification. At high w the MathML source">pT the charged pion, kaon and (anti)proton w the MathML source">RpPb are consistent with unity within statistical and systematic uncertainties.
