Covers 54 such facilities to illustrate the trends and plans for the future. The time involved is covered in three phases: 1960s to Mid-1970s, Mid-1970s to Mid-1980s, and Mid-1980s-onward. The later period is emphasized in this paper. Many of the infrastructure improvements in the 21st century will provide for the expansion of the coastal region and the coastline with artificial islands and the use of floating structures in the coastal ocean space beyond the shore. The new coastal infrastructure will tend toward providing multifunctional needs in an integrated manner for maximum utility, efficiency, and enjoyment with special regard to conservation and protection of the coastal environment.
