Graphene oxide/chitosan deposited cotton fabric was prepared via LbL self-assembly route.

PEI was utilized as the bridge binding component to connect fabric substrate and the LbL layers.

The degree of grafting increased from 1% to 5% with consecutively depositing GO and CS.

The dyeing color depth (K/S value) indicated GO/CS LbL self-assembly process.

(GO/CS)10 deposited fabric exhibited robust ultraviolet protective property UPF = 452.
