The green, blue, gray and white water footprints of the production of wheat, barley and maize were calculated at the provincial and national level. A regional water balance model was used to calculate crop evapotranspiration, effective precipitation and irrigation requirement. The calculation framework of Ababaei and Ramezani Etedali (2014) was adopted and modified to better account for the gray and white water footprints. Feasible strategies to reduce water footprint of cereal production were discussed.
