The Central Basin in Svalbard preserves a record of Arctic Palaeocene volcanism. Despite alteration, immobile elements in the bentonites retain a magmatic signature. Early bentonites match volcanic centres from the Kap Washington Group, N. Greenland. Later ashes appear to originate from the Nares Strait region, near Ellesmere Island. These layers connect the basin development with regional plate tectonic changes.
