We studied how preceding crops affect productivity and resource use of a crop sequence. We evaluated the effect of several single and double crops as preceding crops. Double cropping may not affect the performance of following crops in diversified sequences. Diversifying cropping systems contribute to a more sustainable intensification of cropping systems. Nitrogen uptake may explain the enhanced attainable yields resulting from increasing crop diversity.
