Magnetic stabilization of fluidized beds: Effect of magnetic field orientation

Yield stress, gas velocity at transition to stability and structure of magneto-stabilized beds are measured. Particle chain aggregates are formed by induced interparticle attractive forces that stabilize the bed. Orientation of chains is determined by a balance of magnetic forces and gas drag. The effect of the direction of the magnetic field is analyzed. Stabilization is optimum when the magnetic field is oriented along the direction of the gas flow.
