We tested the association between maternal hypothyroidism and autism in the offspring. We used an experimental model based on methimazole (MMI) administration to rat dams. MMI-exposed rats had no deficits in communication, social interaction and anxiety. MMI-exposed rats showed increased novelty-directed exploratory behaviors.
