Studying the potential of energy saving through vertical greenery systems: Using EnergyPlus simulation program

A simplified mathematical model based on heat balance principle is proposed for assessing thermal performance of VGS. The proposed VGS model is then integrated into EnergyPlus Building Simulation Tool using its Energy Management System (EMS) feature. Simulated results are validated against a reported experimental study, and show good agreement. Results show that VGS can contribute to reduce the surface temperature of building facades and may result in reduction of energy consumption in hotter climates.
