Cortisol modulates men’s affiliative responses to acute social stress

Men’s cortisol response to acute social stress predicted feelings of closeness to a same-sex stranger in a dyadic interaction task.

Exposure to a laboratory-based stress protocol (the TSST-G) alone did not influence feelings of closeness in the dyadic interaction task.

The magnitude of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis reactivity may modulate affiliative responses to acute stress.
