Noise-exposed organs of Corti (199) were used to determine when sensory and supporting cells stopped degenerating. OHCs began dying during the exposure and continued degenerating at a low level for months. IHCs and pillars did not die in sizable numbers until several weeks postexposure. This is the first study to quantitatively demonstrate the delayed degeneration of IHCs and SCs occuring long after noise ends.
