Assessing yield, water productivity and farm economic returns of malt barley as influenced by the sowing dates and supplemental irrigation

Two malt barley seasons with contrasting rainfall were surveyed in a center-pivot field. Sowing dates and irrigation scenarios were assessed using water and economic indicators. Sowing by mid-November leads to reduced water use but lower yields and profit. Sowing by early-January needs more irrigation and leads to higher yields and returns. Rainfed barley is not feasible in drought years and returns are better with late sowing.
