The most frequent prey in mainland Portugal was the Gnathophausia zoea, followed by cephalopods and teleosts.

In immature fish from the northernmost areas the proportion of FA was MUFA>PUFA>SFA.

Fish from mainland Portugal stop maturation in pre-spawning stage and presented PUFA>MUFA>SFA.

Samples from Madeira showed PUFA>SFA>MUFA, with a significant prevalence of PUFA important for reproduction.

15N supports the existence of ontogenic differences in diet.
