We investigate the effect of same-sex sexual behaviour (SSB) on aggression.
SSB significantly reduced levels of aggression between males.
Pairs with fixed SSB roles showed the lowest levels of aggression.
Males that experienced SSB or lost a fight experienced reduced mating success.
Our study indicates that SSB is a noninjurious way for males to settle dominance.
