Despite the central place of mania in mood disorders spectrum and classifications, clinical research dedicated to psychometric assessment of acute mania (and hypomania) are still largely behind the work established in the field of depression. Since the construction of Beigel-Murphy Mania Scale in the beginning of the 70, other scales have been developed on the basis of MSRS construct. So waiting until the early 90 with the renewal interest for clinical trials in acute mania, we observed a significant evolution in psychometric research in this field. The standard instrument is currently represented by the MRS (Mania Rating Scale) which derived from the SADS (Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia). Other scales have been also developed such as the Young scale (YMRS) or the Altman scale (CARS and its patients version, the ASRM). In parallel, self-assessment of acute mania had received a particular attention. This report will present a synthesis of published psychometric data on mania and especially, will be focused on relevant issues in clinical research, as well as, in everyday practice. At the end of this synthesis, the notion of multi-dimensional approach of mania is emphasized which implicates a composite assessment and a more sophisticated choice of anti-manic agents.
