We propose that free will beliefs promote meaning through feelings of belonging. Free will beliefs foster self-control, necessary for social integration. Likewise, belongingness promotes meaningfulness. We consider both themes together. Three studies demonstrate this indirect effect using different materials. Interpreting free will beliefs with meaning-making develops theoretical insights.
