Good epidemiological surveillance systems can be used to define actions to control epidemics. Benford's law evaluates the quality of the data and the sensitivity of epidemiological surveillance systems. Only ten surveillance systems potentially performed well during the Zika epidemic. Benford's distribution should be routinely used to identify places where surveillance can be improved.
