Grassland extent decreased significantly over a 60-year period. Initially, habitat loss was likely to have been the main threat to biodiversity. Now habitat fragmentation probably constitutes the greatest threat to biodiversity. Patch metrics are useful to quantify the different aspects of landscape structure. Patch metrics can be used as rapid surrogates of biodiversity assessment.
