Hydrogen production by microalgae is a green approach compared to chemical methods. Mechanisms of hydrogen production by microalgae and cyanobacteria are presented. Factors affecting microalgal hydrogen production are discussed. Dark fermentation using microalgae biomass based feedstock is reviewed. Challenges faced in hydrogen production by microalgae is critically analyzed.
