New neutral and anionic lanthanide thiocyanate complexes with bpy or phen. The solid phase transition of phen from outer-sphere to inner-sphere coordination has been observed at 170–220 C. The absence of water in europium complexes enhances their luminescence. The magnetic behavior of the europium complexes is similar to that of the known systems with Eu3+.
