The characteristic particles of aged tar oil-contaminated soils are visualized. Resins of tar oil and wood/coal/coke particles are identified in 6 soils. Large amounts of PAH are found in these materials in the size class of sand fraction. The low mass transfer of PAH from resinated particles is described by a model. Selective separation of these materials is a promising treatment strategy.
