Boric acid and/or tungstophosphoric acid-modified mesoporous zirconias were prepared. PEG of different molecular weight were added to zirconia as pore-forming agents. The new materials were tested as catalysts in acetylation of alcohols and phenols. Yields were correlated with the electronic density on the O atom and steric effects. Catalyst was re-used three times without losing activity.
