Ar anneal of low-Si FeNbCuBSi ribbons produce surfaces that stress ribbon interior.

The stress comes mainly from preferred crystallization of surfaces.

Partial substitution of B by P changes annealing evolution of surface properties.

Without P, more crystalline surfaces significantly reduce ribbon's elasticity.

P suppresses surface crystallinity, promotes oxides and reduces mutual stress.
