Aplysia kurodai-derived glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) activate macrophage RAW264.7 cells. Macrophage activation increases cell size, cellular spreading, and vacuole formation. GAGs increase phagocytic ability of RAW264.7 cells. GAG-induced cellular spreading and phagocytosis are reduced by inhibition of AMPK. Disruption of cytoskeletal reorganization reduces GAG-activated phagocytic ability.
