Engineered fusions of catalytic domain of endo-β-agarase I (GH16) and carbohydrate-binding modules (CBM6 and CBM13) were constructed.

The binding affinity and catalytic efficiency of GH16 were enhanced.

Fusion GH16-CBM6-CBM13 was used to prehydrolyze melted agar as the first step in saccharification process.
