Bi-functional carbon nanotube sponges were synthesized, and tested as ORR electrocatalysts and self-standing electrodes.

Improved performances compared to commercial Pt-based catalysts were observed in microbial fuel cells.

Systematic studies revealed a higher power output can be achieved by optimizing the pore volume and mass of the 3D sponge.
