The sintering behavior and mechanical properties of CaSiO3 bioceramics with B2O3 addition

CaSiO3 ceramics were fabricated with and without B2O3 addition by pressureless sintering. The results showed that B2O3 can be successfully used as sintering additive through liquid sintering. The β-CaSiO3 ceramics with 1 wt% B2O3 sintered at 1000 °C revealed flexural strength and fracture toughness of 168.4 MPa and 2.1 MPa m1/2 respectively, both of which were much higher than those of pure β-CaSiO3 ceramics (30.2 MPa, 0.5 MPa m1/2). XRD analysis and SEM observation indicated that the main phase maintained to be β-phase after sintering.
