PfCTSSa is a member of the L-like subfamily of the papain family. PfCTSSa is ubiquitously expressed in all examined tissues. PfCTSSa mRNA is remarkably increased in liver, head kidney, and spleen after being challenged. rPfCTSSa appeares to have the strongest activity at pH 8.5 and 35 °C in a concentration-dependent manner.
