Dysfunction of the striatum is proposed to be involved in stuttering. We report a voxel-based morphometry study of the striatum in a cohort of chronic stutterers. Left caudate has reduced grey matter volume in people who stutter compared to controls. Data suggest that stuttering arises from deficient articulatory movement selection and sequencing.
