Structural analysis and emission properties of Ce3+ complexes with N-coordinating tridentate ligands in solution

Ce3+ complexes with tridentate ligands, “terpy” and “pybim”, were synthesized. “terpy” and “pybim” stand for 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine and 2,2′-(2,6-pyridinediyl)bis(benzimidazole), respectively. The changes in the absorption and emission spectra are ascribed to the metal–ligand interactions. These Ce3+ complexes show 4f–5d emission bands upon ligand excitation. The emission quantum yields of these complexes were determined for their potential use as blue light sources.
