The chlorination mechanism of integrally asymmetric cellulose triacetate (CTA)-based and thin film composite polyamide-based forward osmosis membrane

Study of the chlorination of CTA-based and TFC PA-based FO membranes. By ToF-SIMS, chlorine first reacts with acetyl/acetate group, then pyranose ring. High chlorine dosage cleaved the pyranose ring, led to loss of membrane selectivity. PA-based membrane was more vulnerable to acidic chlorine than CTA-based membranes. Alkaline chlorine solution insignificantly affected both FO membrane types.
